The Team
My aviation career began in 1989 working in the parts department at Rocky Mountain Aircraft in Calgary Alberta. With a private pilot’s license held since I was 18 and early exposure to the industry through part time work experience with Alpine Helicopters, the foundation was set for a dynamic career. In 1993, I started working with Westcan Aircraft in Kamloops, BC, under Ralph Emsland as his first employee. Helping Westcan Aircraft grow was an opportunity that allowed for significant professional development, including completing my commercial fixed-wing license with Kamloops Air Services in 1995 and earning an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) license in 2000, while gaining experience flying part-time charter flights.I obtained a commercial helicopter license in 1995 through Delta Helicopters in BC, enabling a transition into helicopter operations. In 1996, my first commercial flying job as a Bell 214B logging co-pilot provided invaluable field experience. However, later that year, a catastrophic accident in New Denver, BC, resulted in the total loss of the aircraft. Despite the incident, it offered crucial insights into safety protocols and helicopter performance under extreme conditions, further enhancing my technical and practical skills. After a few months, and with the encouragement of industry colleagues, I got back on the horse, obtained a Bell 206 endorsement, and moved to Calgary. I did small aircraft maintenance with John Kelly’s operation in Calgary before starting up and managing Turbowest Helicopters’ base in Drayton Valley, Alberta. My experience during firefighting operations at the Cold Lake Air Weapons Range further deepened my expertise in emergency operations.A temporary shift from flying helicopters to Kenn Borek Air in 2000 allowed me to finalize my AME license and complete monthly rotations to Resolute Bay, Nunavut, maintaining DHC-6 Twin Otters. I returned to helicopter operations in 2001, flying with Yellowhead Helicopters, supporting northern Alberta’s fire and energy sectors. In 2003, I landed a helicopter pilot position with Caribbean Helicopters, opening the door to flying in the Caribbean. In 2007, a medical situation required a temporary return to Canada, during which I diversified my skills by working as a Harley-Davidson technician. Soon after, I had the opportunity to ferry a Bell 206 from Trinidad to Florida, which led to advanced maintenance training at Northern Lights College and a return to flying.Further flight experience with Mustang Helicopters, Alpine Helicopters, Bighorn Helicopters, and Black Tusk Helicopters broadened my expertise across heli-skiing, energy support, forestry, and logging operations. In 2013, I returned to the Caribbean, joining Caribbean Helicopters, and soon began flying as the Montserrat Volcano Observatory (MVO) pilot, focusing on mountain flying and volcanic survey operations. Additionally, I flew numerous external load operations in Guadeloupe and St. Maarten, further expanding my skill set in challenging environments. In 2016, I co-founded Emerald Isle Helicopters in Montserrat, which involved acquiring and ferrying a Bell 206LR from Kamloops. Navigating regulatory frameworks with ECCAA, Transport Canada, and ASSI, the company achieved operational compliance but later ceased operations due to market conditions. This was followed by a year of month-long rotations flying in Labrador and the high Arctic for Universal Helicopters. In 2019, I relocated to St. Kitts, flying and managing a corporate LongRanger for Kelly Construction. Extensive operations throughout the Caribbean led to consulting roles in 2022, focusing on aviation start-ups in Antigua and St. Kitts, and establishing key operational bases.
